Apple talks tracking

PETER SVENSSON AP Technology Writer
NEW YORK — Apple Inc. denied Wednesday that iPhones store a record of their users’ movements for up to a year and blamed privacy concerns partly on a misunderstanding.

White iPhone on sale today

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Apple says the long-delayed white iPhone 4 will go on sale today in the United States, United Kingdom and 26 other countries for $199 or $299 depending on the model. Apple Inc. said Wednesday the prices are for phones purchased with a two-year contract from AT&T Inc. or Verizon Wireless in the U.S. The black iPhone 4 went on sale last June. Apple had hoped to make the white phones available in July, then in late 2010. But it has said that the gadget was more challenging to produce than expected.
A data file publicized by security researchers last week doesn’t store users’ locations, but a list of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in their general area, the company said. It promised software fixes to address concerns over that file.
The data, downloaded from Apple, help the phone figure out its location without having to listen for faint signals from GPS satellites. That means navigation applications can present the phone’s location faster and more accurately, Apple said.
Apple said the data are stored for up to a year because of a software error. The company said there’s no need to store data for more than seven days, and a software update in the next few weeks will limit the amount of data in that file.
The iPhone will also stop backing up the file to the user’s computer, a practice that raised some concerns. Computers are much more vulnerable to remote hacking attempts than are phones.
A third planned fix is to stop downloading the data to phones that have all “Location Services” turned off, Apple said, and to encrypt the file on those where it’s on.
“Users are confused, partly because creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date,” Apple said in its statement.
Wednesday’s statement was Apple’s first comprehensive response to the most recent allegations. Apple had revealed the nature of the location file in a letter to Congress last summer following an earlier round of questions about its location-tracking practices.
The file drew new attention last week, after a report from researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden at a technology conference in Santa Clara, Calif.
As demonstrated by location-analysis software released by Allan and Warden, the lists of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers generated by iPhones can be used to construct a general record of users’ movements.
But a snoop needs access to the victim’s phone or PC, both of which usually store lots of other personal information. Phones contain texts, e-mails and lists of phone calls. PCs contain such information as tax returns, logs of websites visited and passwords.
In an email, Warden said it was good to have an explanation for the existence of the file. He agreed that it doesn’t contain precise location information.
“By pulling down information about nearby towers, the log can reveal where you are at a neighborhood level,” he said, adding that he’s relieved that Apple is applying software fixes.

Back to basics for Padini, glam for Vincci

For spring, Padini goes back to basics while Vincci sets on the glam trail.
IT’S been an outstanding year for C.Y. Cheong, executive director of Padini Holdings Berhad. The hugely successful home-grown labels Padini and Vincci recently received awards under the Putra Brand Awards. Then, Cheong himself received personal recognition during the Industry Award at the recent Mercedes-Benz STYLO Fashion Awards earlier this month.
Here’s a look at what the fuss is all about.
Smart collegian outfit with matching tie.
For Padini Spring 2011, the season is about going back to basics with touches of fun and glamour. Whether it’s work wear or casual attire, it is about the working man and woman who lives a full, fun-filled lifestyle. Clothes are designed with ease and style in mind, offering both classic and fashionable choices.
For men, it’s all about looking fashionably dapper. Do that in smart suit jackets, suit vests and well-cut suiting pants. Change the look at the office easily with the myriad of shirts on offer, from solid colours of purple, brown, blue and white to striped, checked and gingham long-sleeved shirts. There’s also a choice of the classic cut or the slimmer modern fit cut.
The front lapel of shirts come with some detailing; these can take you from a day in the office to a formal dinner at night. Pants are cut to fit, so the overall look is slimmer and smarter. For accessories, choose from slim ties in various colours, and silk bow ties for cocktails and dinners.
Sensual combo: Polka dot and ruffles for this pump.
When it’s time to clock out, go preppy chic in polo shirts that come in colours of the season – white, yellow and blue. Or, smarten up in short-sleeved shirts in checks, stripes and gingham. Pair these with short cuffed pants and you’re set for a stylish weekend.
For the hidden fashionista in you guys, choose from the classic yet trendy blouson jacket, that goes as well with jeans as it does with a pair of tailored khakis. There is also an array of lightweight knit vests, cardigans and striped pullovers, perfect for layering and creating different looks with basic pieces.
The working girl can look forward to pencil skirts, skinny pants and button down shirts which make up sound basic pieces in shades of grey, khaki, black and white. Dress these up with a stylised vest or a cropped jacket, and liven up the office hours.
A beautifully cut classic shift dress is a must-have for that important business meeting. You can amp up the look with an equally classic jacket with puff sleeves, or soften it with a luxurious cardigan.
Vest and blouse with slim-fitting pants.
Layering with the right pieces can take your outfit from boring to inspirational. Pair a no-nonsense A-line skirt with a blouse with ruffle details, a flirty pleated skirt with a button-down short-sleeved shirt, or wear a striking blue cardigan over a pretty white shirtdress for a nautical take on work wear. Make colour work for you as the season’s pieces come in splashes of yellow, blue and green.
After work, chill out and relax in style with structured shorts and puff-sleeved button down tops. Jazz up a basic shirtdress with leggings and a casual jacket, and you’re ready for a day out. Prices range from RM69 to RM399. Available at all Padini and leading department stores.
Shoe chic
For Spring 2011, Vincci starts off with a nod towards spots, platforms and rhinestones, and it looks set to be a scorcher! Naiveté gets the sophisticated treatment and swoony satins meets bling-bling wedges resulting in glamour chic.
(Left) A-line pleated skirt with turtle neck top and jacket; blouson jacket, gingham shirt and slim jeans.
The range is all about the girly girl in you: delight in pretty pearls and crochet work, or match ballerina shoes with skinny jeans and a cropped jacket for a sexy polished finish.
Get ready to steal the fashion limelight with diamonté kitten heels and a hello-dotty handbag. Dusty pink is the colour du jour and the trend is so flirty yet feminine.
Feeling young? Don a pair of leg-baring shorts, skirt or super-sweet dress to go with the shoes. Or go chic with cropped crochet tank and teetering beige wedges. To finish the look, go for a large quilted tote bag (poodle optional).
For the night, get ready to wow the boys with neon funky cool heels and superstar sporty boots. Whether you’re looking for a hint of sporty or simple urban style, Vincci is all about channelling the A-lister cool in you through mesh and neoprene bags.
Classy black, sharp white, funky fushia, pyschedelic yellow, steel grey are the hottest shades in town. Whether it’s on a handbag, sandal or wedge, the final impression is definitely a much too-cool-for school look.
Prices for shoes range from RM43 to RM129 and bags from RM99 to RM169. Available at all Vincci outlets.

HP Envy 14 Beats Edition (14-1195ea) review

Design, Build and Accessories

If you want a powerful, premium laptop that's not a Macbook Pro 15in, HP's Envy line is an interesting alternative, generally offering sharp styling, high-end build materials, excellent ergonomics and loads of features. After checking out the 17in 3D model (the aptly named HP Envy 17 3D), we now thought we'd take a look at the smaller and lighter Envy 14, which as its name suggests is a 14.5in powerhouse. However, this isn't the 'regular' 14-1190e with its silver aluminium finish, but rather the 14-1195ea 'Beats' Edition.

Paired with a set of Monster Beats Solo headphones certified by Dr. Dre, the 1195ea comes in a sexy combination of red and black to match. The lid is now a matt black affair with the HP logo attractively highlighted in glossy black, though the massive red 'b' (for 'Beats') is a bit overbearing and could have done with being either more subtle or backlit. Fingerprints are also a bit of an issue, but not nearly as much as they would have been with a glossy black plastic finish.
Opening the laptop up, its insides are even more attractive. Along with Apple, HP realizes the value of minimalism, and very little breaks the 1195ea's sleek black lines. The screen is of the 'borderless' variety, meaning a single sheet of glass across the screen and bezel makes it appear seamless – though it also ups the reflections to frankly distracting levels.

Thankfully, unlike with the Samsung Series 9, HP's finish is more consistent, and the entire keyboard surround is a single piece. It sports a lovely soft-touch finish (similar to the feel of the lid on Lenovos such as the ThinkPad X220t) that makes it a delight to rest your palms on yet doesn't suffer too much from grease marks or fingerprints.
Adding further to the laptop's appeal is a band of gunmetal trim surrounding the ports. Even the power adapter is sleek and curved, allows you to detach its cables at both ends, and offers a USB port for charging your devices without needing the laptop. These features make it our favourite power adapter on a laptop yet, and we hope other manufacturers will take note.

Also on hand to increase the 14-1195ea's premium feel is a felt cloth slipcase, which is a far more useful addition than the cardboard carrying bag for the Samsung 900X3A, and in another nice touch the manual is found on an Envy-branded SD card!
Of course, the star addition to the show is those Monster Beats Solo headphones, which are worth around £150 on their own. That's quite a value-add, but then we are talking about a laptop that costs over £1,000. If you want the full low-down, go and have a read of our review. Otherwise, here's a quick summary.

Sporting a matt black, almost soft outer finish and grey headband padding with leatherette on-ear cups, the Beats Solo look and feel just as premium as the laptop. Build quality is excellent, with an adjustable metal inner frame and metal hinges that allow the phones to fold flat for transport.
There's an extensive range of accessories too, including a thickly padded carrying pouch, cleaning cloth, and two thick red cables (one plain, the other with a 'control centre' offering volume controls, a call-answer button and microphone).

Unfortunately the headphones' sound quality doesn't live up to their build and presentation, as they are so bass heavy as to almost completely ruin the vast majority of the music we used to test them with.

BlackBerry likely to unveil new smart phones next week

TORONTO: BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) is likely to unveil new smart phones at its annual BlackBerry World conference next week in Florida.

"It's going to be a newsy summer for us. And a very newsy BlackBerry World in a few weeks. Let's just say I like what we've got,'' RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie had said at a glam party in Manhattan to celebrate the launch of the PlayBook earlier this month.

RIM says at its annual BlackBerry World conference May 3-5 it will share "the latest information surrounding the BlackBerry platform to business leaders, IT professionals, BlackBerry Channel Partners, software vendors and solution providers.''

A Wall Street blog Wednesday said the Canadian wireless giant will unveil some new BlackBerry smart phones to arrest the decline in its share of the North American handset market.

Since RIM had introduced its latest operating system BlackBerry 6.0 at the last year's gathering, it is expected to unveil BlackBerry 6.1, as well as at least one new BlackBerry smartphone , according to the blog.

RIM has already said that it will unveil BlackBerry 6.1-based smart phones during the current fiscal year ending in February 2012.

Co-CEO Balsillie has also said that the new 6.1-based smart phones will feature both Qwerty keyboards and touch-screens and offer much better performance and fidelity compared to 6.0-based BlackBerries.

In his note Wednesday, Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital (a wing of the Royal Bank of Canada), also hinted that RIM could unveil a new touchscreen version of its BlackBerry Bold that runs on the new operating system, according to the journal.

"While new products and software may face mixed reviews (when compared to Apple), we believe once launched, they may exhibit uptake above low expectations,'' the RBC analyst was quoted as saying.

The analyst's note added that RIM may also release sale figures of its PlayBook tablet. He hinted that the BlackBerry make might have sold 100,000 PlayBooks in its first week of launch - a robust figure compared to sales of Motorola's Xoom and Samsung's Galaxy in their first week.

But on the Toronto Stock Exchange, RIM stock has failed to move since the launch of the tablet.
